Niche Marketing 5: Your Website Blueprint

By now you should have a list of keywords you would like to target. Today is the time to plan for the website. No, we are not going straight into building the web site, but first we need to come up with a rough idea about what the final web site should look like.

That’s why we call this website blueprint. A great blueprint illustrates clearly not only the layout but also the structure of page linkages, type of content, directory structures, and more.

A good model allows us to create content independently but still attached to the main theme of the site and the whole monetization scheme. It also prevents us from having to manually update all the pages when only a little bit of information changes.

For years I’ve been building websites of all kinds, I found that planning great site not only save us time but also a bunch of follow-up work. Current technologies allow us to create content easily without the need to know HTML and design.

What should we do with the list of keywords? We can create all sorts of content based on the list. That is an initial attempt to let search engines know what our pages are about. The most typical type of content is article. Basically, you have to write as many articles as the amount of keywords you have at hand.

Let’s get into this more deeply. We want to structure our site in a way that we have the navigation and content part on each the left and right hand side of the page, or vice versa. The navigation bar consists of a short list (may be 5-7) of your main keywords. Usually these are keywords that have a relatively high number of search history during last month.

The easiest way to do this is by starting from your your top most popular keyword first. Search on Google using that keyword and see how many pages contain that keyword. Visit top 5-10 from the results and determine the PageRank from the Google Toolbar. Query Yahoo! using the link: command to see how many inbound links point to the website.

The point is, if you can outdo them, then it can be included as your main keywords. Otherwise, go to the next most searched keyword in the list and repeat the process above.

Remaining keywords in the list are the second tier keywords, which we will write an article for each one. Some people like to extend the idea to include the third tier. The decision is yours.

The main keyword pages should have compelling content that relate to your visitors. In those pages you place various links to affiliate products and/or services. All pages can have additional stream of income if you put AdSense or other contextual advertising up.

That said, you can start planning for the website. Great website is both compelling to human visitors and search engines. Flash technology is great, but excessive animation distract your visitors from your main point.

There are 3 common ways to build a content-rich niche website:

  1. Using static HTML template - Buy one or search the net for free templates. You need to know how to use Frontpage, Dreamweaver, or other HTML editor to modify the template. They are not that difficult but repetitive.
  2. Using content management system (CMS) - Require you to install server side software. Some hosting has an automatic script installation procedures, or you can hire a webmaster who can do it for you for under $50. Depends on the application, it involves a learning curve and you need to learn how to use it effectively.
  3. Take advantage of blog technology - A blog software is similar to content management system with less features for creating and managing various content.

Whichever your choice is, you are better off worrying about the content. Carefully write articles with the keywords scattered in the main copy and in the title. Certainly using content management system saves you some time because once installed you only have to type and submit the content, but if this is over you, don’t despair, conventional website can do it as greatly as others, as long as you pay attention to the content and the steps after this.
